Job Summary

The Calibration Technician is responsible for performing precise and accurate measurements on mechanical equipment throughout the company. The technician also provides necessary calibration reports to management, as required.

 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform internal calibrations using high-precision, highly accurate measurement instruments on machined, and mechanical gages.
  • Perform gage calibrations and layout evaluations for new/existing gauges and fixtures using approved standards, techniques, and equipment in and outside of Metrology lab.
  • Responsible for accurate record keeping of gage status in Gage Tracking software.
  • Train new department employees in the use and maintenance of certain Metrology lab equipment and maintenance of related documentation.
  • Ensure completion of calibrations in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Read and understand technical procedures, standards and engineering drawings and inter-department correspondence, reports, and documentation.
  • Enter calibration activities on a computerized asset management system, including equipment records, events, and history.
  • Maintain a neat, organized, and orderly calibration laboratory and an accurate filing system (of calibration records).
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Assist with any specialized training needs; assist staff in identifying all other training needs; accreditation requirements, purpose, scope, administration, and practice within the calibration department.
  • Review current calibration publications for staying up to date with trends, practices, and procedures available to the technician.
  • Help to promote all companywide quality improvement efforts.
  • Follow and promote safety requirements and environmental policies and procedures throughout the company based on current regulations and needs of the company.

Expected Areas of Competence (i.e., knowledge, skills, and abilities)

  • Ability to work with minimum supervision. Responsible for making decisions related to own work and that of others within broad guidelines established by department supervisor or manager.
  • Ability to build relationships with other areas of the organization.
  • Highly competent in mathematics (geometry, trigonometry, algebra), working knowledge of nearly all measurement equipment used within Metrology (Optical comparators, contour tracer, profilometer, optical gauge, Electronic Height Gages, and general inspection tools, etc.).
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to use typical measuring devices (micrometer, caliper, comparator, thread gages, go/no go gages and custom gages) and test instruments (pull and torque testers). Experience with programmable inspection machines (vision systems, CMM, etc.) is a plus.
  • Ability to read standard operating procedures and engineering drawings; basic understanding of engineering drawings using Geometric Dimension and Tolerancing (GD&T) required.

 

Education/Experience Requirements

  • 2 years of Calibration experience or related field.
  • High school Diploma or GED required plus three to five years’ experience as a Quality Technician in an FDA regulated industry or in a high-tech manufacturing operation as a calibration technician or mechanical inspector or equivalent, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in a QA/QC or machine shop environment preferred.
  • Familiarity with ANSI/NCSL Z540-01 and ISO/IEC17025 plus.
