Job Summary:

The Senior Facilities Technician serves as the lead hands-on resource for facility operations, interfacing directly with customers, staff, contractors, and vendors. This role carries primary responsibility for repairs to grounds and site buildings, oversight of all Preventive Maintenance (PM) and Corrective Maintenance (CM) programs, and mentorship of junior technicians. The Senior Tech is expected to independently diagnose and resolve complex facility issues, lead small projects, and act as a key liaison between facilities management and skilled trade contractors.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead coordination with management, technicians, and subcontractors on work scheduling, system updates, and repairs to maintain accurate, fully functional site systems.
  • Serve as a technical resource and mentor to junior Facilities Technicians, providing guidance on repairs, troubleshooting approaches, and best practices.
  • Perform advanced handyman and light trade work including painting, drywall repair/patching, carpentry, and basic electrical, applying strong mechanical aptitude to diagnose root causes rather than symptoms.
  • Maintain comprehensive logs and documentation; lead or support facility projects from scoping through completion, including interpreting and marking up drawings and specifications.
  • Provide hands-on support and oversight to skilled trade Mechanics and other Techs on HVAC, Electrical, Plumbing, and general maintenance work; escalate and coordinate with licensed trades as needed.
  • Own the upkeep, organization, and safety compliance of the Chiller Plant and Facilities storage areas, including inventory control of on-shelf parts and repair materials, and initiating reorders.
  • Assist in training new technicians on tools, safety protocols, and site-specific procedures.

Expected Areas of Competence (i.e., knowledge, skills, and abilities)

  • Demonstrated ability to manage and prioritize multiple concurrent tasks and competing deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong written communication skills; ability to maintain clear, legible, and accurate documentation and logs.
  • Ability to climb ladders, operate hand tools, and use facility equipment safely and independently.
    • Strong reading comprehension for instructions, labels, specifications, and safety documentation.
    • Solid working knowledge of basic math and measurement conversions.
    • High attention to detail in reviewing drawings, specs, and material identification information.
    • Advanced troubleshooting ability — capable of diagnosing root cause issues, recommending process/system improvements, and implementing corrective action independently.
    • Proficient with Microsoft Office and CMMS/work order management systems.
    • Self-directed with strong leadership presence; comfortable guiding and coordinating the work of others in a team environment.
    • Valid state motor vehicle license with a safe driving record per company policy.
    • Willingness to participate in overtime and on-call rotation, including after-hours emergency response leadership.
    • Proficient with hand tools, tamper, trencher, grader, sod cutter, post hole digger, trucks, tractor, lift truck, paint spraying equipment, ladders, high jacks, scaffolding, scrubber, buffer, grinder, sweepers, and steam cleaner.
    • Able to lift 50 lbs. and work outdoors in inclement weather.
    • Strong ability to read and interpret site drawings and blueprints.

Education/Experience Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required; trade certification in Plumbing, Carpentry, Electrical, or HVAC strongly preferred.
  • 5–8+ years of industry-related technical field experience across Electrical, Plumbing, Carpentry, Drywall, and Painting, including demonstrated experience leading repairs or mentoring junior staff.
  • Prior experience in a lead, senior, or supervisory-adjacent facilities role preferred.
  • Valid Vehicle Operator's License in good standing.

Travel Requirement
